Our guide to planning your next family holiday

Planning a family holiday

Planning a family holiday can be a daunting task. But with the right planning and preparation, you’re pretty much guaranteed to have a great trip!

We’ve covered our favourite 10 tips to make sure you have the best family holiday! From setting a budget and deciding on a destination, to choosing the right accommodation that fits your needs.

Hopefully, these tips will make your planning process a little easier so that you can concentrate on making the most of your time together as a family. It doesn't matter if you want a beach holiday or a city break.

10 tips to help you with family holiday planning

1. Agree on a budget.

Work out a reasonable budget for the holiday and stick to it. It’s key to identify a budget that accommodates everything you need it to. From activities to accommodation.

2. Choose your destination.

Holiday destinations can definitely make or break a holiday. Before you settle on a location, make sure you have done your research and that it caters to the type of family you want.

Don’t forget to make sure that the whole family is happy with the location choice. Looking up locations on websites like Trip Advisor or Airbnb can help you make sure there’s something for everyone.

3. Plan your activities

Ok, so you’ve settled on a location, now it’s time for the fun part! Planning any excursions or activities can help make sure that you make the most of your time there. It also means you're more likely to get a good balance of things to do for everybody.

4. Look for deals and discounts!

Looking at travelling during “off-peak” times of the year can actually save you a lot of money. Naturally, holiday lets will fill up much faster during the school holidays, so looking to go just a week later means you can bag yourself a significant discount!

5. Consider the time of year you’re going.

Things like the weather, school holidays and peak tourist seasons can really affect a trip. If you’re looking to explore your location when it’s quieter so you don’t have to battle for space on the beach, then consider off-peak holidays.

6. Research to find the right accommodation

As a large family, there’s nothing more annoying than having to spread ourselves across multiple hotel rooms.

It often means that you have to make sacrifices to make sure that someone old enough and responsible is in each room. And that’s not to mention that living in a single room all week can be a nightmare.

A suitable alternative is looking at a holiday let where you can rent the whole home. For example, here at Seaborne House, we have 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. That’s plenty of room for everybody!

7. Plan your packing

Think about the items that you need to bring and pack accordingly. For example, you should take into consideration weather conditions, the activities you have planned, and any appropriate special needs.

This is again where staying somewhere like a holiday let can really be a benefit. Our holiday cottage comes equipped with pretty much everything you can think of. From tea towels to a high-tech coffee machine, we’ve got you covered.

8. Consider transportation

Thinking about how you’ll get there and how you’ll travel around while you’re there is super important. You don’t want to make excursion plans and then realise that local transport is a nightmare.

9. Safety should come first.

This is particularly true if you’re travelling with small children. But always keep safety in mind. Before you travel, research local safety tips for your destination and make sure your family knows and understands any dangers.

10. If you’re going abroad don’t forget your documentation!

If you’re looking to travel to Europe, you’ll need to make sure that you have all the necessary documentation for travelling like a visa.

The best family holiday

It can be a lot of work planning a holiday for your family, but following the tips above can definitely make it a lot more manageable.

By taking the extra time to plan and prepare, you can rest assured that your family will be able to enjoy a safe, fun and memorable trip together.

And remember, the most important thing is to enjoy your time together! Make those precious memories together that you’ll treasure forever.
